My New MacBook Pro has arrived!

April 17th, 2008 Leave a comment Go to comments

After 2 years of having too many problems with my white box PC (aptly named “Monster”), and especially in light of all of the recent rebooting /crashing/fixing, I finally felt it was time to buy a new computer; I chose a MacBook Pro notebook.

I’m not particularly attached to any brand of hardware – it doesn’t matter to me whether it was made by Dell, HP, Apple or the computer store down the street, it’s just a tool – as long as it works, I don’t care who made it (with the exception of companies that use slave/child labor or harm animals in the making of their products).

Of course, I’ve gotten plenty of ribbing from my Graphic Designer friends (and non designer friends too) about not working on a Mac. Hey, I learned how to use a computer on a Mac, my first computer was a Mac (I’m NOT going to tell you how long ago) – I’m certainly not anti-Mac. The truth is – I just didn’t see the need to spend the extra $$$.

I finally decided to make the switch for these reasons:

  1. I wanted to buy the new Adobe CS3 software, and because it costs so much (nearly as much as the notebook!) it was better to make the decision to switch to a Mac before purchasing that software for my PC and having to buy it again.
  2. I have an iPhone, which I hope (because it is an Apple product) will communicate easier with the MacBook.
  3. There is now a more dependable way to run the Windows OS (using VMware Fusion) to allow me to run the PC only programs that I can’t live without.
  4. I wanted a 15″ notebook for portability, the new MacBooks can accept 4gb of RAM, so they have enough power to do what I need, and they have dual DVI built in so I can use my 30″ Dell monitor.
  5. It’s pretty (I’m only sort of kidding here – what’s not to love about the clean design and the beautiful OS?).

So, here I am – with my new MacBook, and I’m as excited as a kid on Christmas morning! Because it seems like the thing to do (as a photographer and an excited child), I’ve photographed un-boxing my new toy. Like you haven’t seen this a million times on the web ;)

    Hi Brad!
I did enjoy watching you guys do your podcast (http://theguyspodcast.com)! Looks like you guys have fun doing it too!

Great set of questions, I wish I had considered #1 a little more carefully. That has been one of the most difficult parts of the transition, not only because the OS works differently, but because the shortcuts you know on the PC have different key combinations on the MAC. It’s been a particular pain in the butt with the Adobe programs, it has slowed my work flow. :(

ps. Why would you want Front Row if you have Preview?

Hey Mike B. (searchbuzz) I am planning to do a post about how it’s going with the mac….looking like it’s going to be closer to a 4 month review though. ;)

    Hey Christina,

Great job ruling out a PC or Mac. I’m a tech guy at a school and get the question: “what computer should I get? Mac or PC?” all the time. Faculty and students believe I will give the default answer, “Get a mac!” since I am a Mac user (and love my experience with the Mac). But I don’t. This would be doing them a great disservice. I usually give them a list of questions. Here they are:

    1) Is now a good time for you to learn a new Operating System? The basics of OS X are the same as Windows, yet the specifics are different.

    2) Do you have software that will not work with the other OS? How expensive is it? Is it time to upgrade that software? Is there a version of that software to run on the new OS you may be moving to?

3)What are you planning to do with the new computer? Will one computer do the task better than the other?

Usually these three points get the person to really think about the purchase. It isn’t about the shiny new Apple, or Dell, or Sony. It is about what you want to do and what will help accomplish those tasks the best. You got it! ;-)

Glad you enjoyed our first live podcast. Hope to see you again!

Can you do a 3 month post / review about your experiences thus far with your new MacBook?

As someone who just purchased their first MAC myself, 24″ iMAC, I would love to hear what I am in for! :) I also have CS3 running..(never used before) I think I am in for a world of hurt….I mean learning!! ;)

    thanks!

FYI: Don’t go crazy looking for the remote like I did, they don’t come with the MacBook Pro’s anymore its a 19.00 dollar ad on :)

Yes the iPhone will play much nicer with your Mac, just remember use Mail not Entourage If you get the latest Microsoft Office.

Hope you enjoy the new book
